The Big Freeze!

I have recently built a pc for my wife, a thing that I have done quite a few times before.

MSI MB
256mb ram
Bla! Bla!

When I fire it up all goes seemingly well, and then Whack everything freezes,
I've tried changing the ram, keyboard and mouse to no avail. Sometimes I even get as far as loading a program before the freeze happens.
Any suggestion for a cure would be gratefully accepted.

Whoops! Tried a start in safe mode and things appear to be working o.k. so it looks like a driver or something.

Hi...

By repair the OS, I take it you mean with a Windows XP installation disc and not a restore disc?

Also, it does sound like a driver problem somewhere along the line and a repair install isn't going to fix that. It may be an idea to check out Driver Agent. After a quick scan, you will be advised of any important system/hardware drivers you may be missing and for a $29.99 fee, you can download them directly from that site for the next twelve months or you can download them all for free from the manafacturers websites...though the latter may take a little time, it'll def save some money.

Report back on how you get on please.

Also, whilst in safe mode, check for any alerts/conflictions in your Device Manager :-)

Ignore my ignorance there OldFart2...can see this is in the W2K section and not XP...but the same applies for the rest :-)

Thankyou for the advice, unfortunatel I can't get online in safemode, so it looks like aformat and reinstall.

Try reseating your video card, and make sure you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website. If it is on-board, then skip the reseating and go for the drivers.

Also, you may want to download Memtest86 and have it check your RAM.

Well I have solved the problem, it was caused by overheating of the CP, I had been a bit stingey with the paste when fitting the proccesor.cleaned everything up, refitted the cp properly this time and all is working just fine

Thankyou for the helpful suggestions.
