Display adapter/settings probs

After I startup I get a message:

"Display - There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with your hardware"

And it only opens in safe mode, I have tried to change the setting but can't go higher than 256 colours.

Please help me!!!

I have no idea what card there is, if u tell me how to check I will. It's an oldish one that's for sure.

It didn't happen during any installation, I was trying to check my network neighborhood actually.

And it doesn't open in safe mode as I said, it just open in 16 colours, and doesn't even let me change to 256.

Everything seems to be working, other than the fact that i can barely see anything because the colour is so bad.

Help!

Can you tell us what type of system you have (Dell, HP, Ect.)? Also look on the back of the machine and see if the video connector is plugged into the motherboard or if the connector is plugged into an AGP/PCI card.
