Gentlemen (and ladies, we do not discriminate),
I have installed an IDE drive in a USB external enclosure for my ThinkPad 570E. I used the drivers that came with my no-name enclosure. When the PC attempts to do a Plug-Play install, it gets to the USB to ATAPI Adapter install and there hangs. I have attempted to use alternate drivers and force the installation by updating the driver from the Device List, but to no avail. I am using Win98SE, and the version of my USB card is 1.1. Can you help? Thank you in advance. David |

Actually, W98SE works pretty well with USB devices, and I've installed several different flavors of USB disks on W98SE without issues.
The only thing I can suggest here is to totally remove all traces of the USB device driver, including the USB hubs, etc. Reboot with nothing connected to the USB and allow Windows to rebuild the USB driver tree. Install the drivers WITHOUT first plugging the USB disk into the system, reboot and then see if you can connect the USB disk.

Install of USB drive hangs - please help!
I did what johnwill suggested, but it still fails to work, with the same symptoms. It did however brake my printer setup so I had to reinstall that...
One question is this -- my PC has only a USB 1.1 port, and the enclosure is USB 2.0. Can this be the cause? |

I use USB 2.0 disks on USB 1.1 ports all the time with no issues. I have a pair of 2.5" USB 2.0 disks that I take on the road, and they've been connected to dozens of USB 1.1 ports with various O/S versions from W98 and up.
