disk space unaccounted for

Hi there,
I am receiving low disk space errors indicating I have ~40MB free on my hard drive. When I manually tally up the used disk space (by selecting all files in C: and clicking Properties) I should have 800MB free. Thus there is some space unaccounted for on this drive. The total drive space is 3.02GB and the used (accounted for) space is around 2.2GB.
I had a similar problem last week that seemed to clear up mysteriously after I did some seemingly innocuous poking around and cleaning up of files (but nothing on the order of 800MB!).
Does this ring any bells with anybody? NAV doesn't find anything and I also use Sygate Personal Firewall.
Thanks for any assistance.

Okay. A friend advised me to fix the Virtual Memory settings on this computer. Previously I had let Windows ME handle the VM automatically. I set the VM to 200MB for both min and max. This seems to have stabilized the computer for now - but I don't think this is the root of the problem. Why would Windows be maxing out my hard-disk space for use as VM?

here, this diskscanning tool should give you a picture of exactly what is happening on your hard disks.
