You usaully can use any windows 98 disk,
but,if he already has first edition installed,
it should detect it.

It may detect it,BUT, when I upgraded to win 2k it asked for the disk to verify the install...I just checked and I dont have a 98fe disk so can I use the original disk that came with the computer, just in case it asks???

If it is an upgrade disk,it should work.
A second edition updates disk needs
first edition installed on the hard drive.

Basically , they just downloaded and saved all the windows updates for win98 and used a program like autopatcher to slipstream them all together and install in the correct sequence. You could just as easily go to the win98 corporate download site and do it all yourself, but why bother?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d.../corporate.asp

Originally they had a win98SE Update CD which you may find on ebay which sold for around $25 new to upgrade from win98FE to 98SE.
Once those were discontinued unless you can find a used one your option would be to get an 98SEUpgrade which should work or even Windows ME.

As cheap as 98Se upgrade cds appear to be on ebay, you may find that it is easier to use one than to search for the update cd.
