missing cd drive

I'm going to a friends house and helping them with a computer problem later today. But I'm more into programming and not hardware or windows. They have windows 98 and the cd drive will occassionally disappear. They tried deleting the driver and rebooting but the system detected new hardware did not pop up. They have a compaq and someone had told them that compaq and outside parts (ie they added a different manufacturer cd drive) can have trouble, Is there any truth to that? What do you guys do when the cd drive is missing?
Thanks, Mary

Try this!

Open the System Properties dialog box.
Click the Device Manager tab.
See if there is a drive listed in there, If so do the following.
Click the plus sign next to the type of drive, and then double-click
the disk or CD-ROM drive for which you want to change the letter.
Click the Settings tab.
Under Reserved drive letters, change the drive letter assignment.
Notes
You can also open the System Properties dialog box by clicking Start,
pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-
clicking System.
If the option to change the drive letter assignment is unavailable,
you cannot change the drive letter.

I will give that a try. Thanks!
I went there today and tried uninstalling, unplugging, etc and the driver would not delete itself. I'm also unable to find the driver. Searched the net and noone seems to have. Windows says everything is fine, but when you click the cd drive it will say it is not accessible. Anyone know why this is happening?
