During the install be very careful and read each box before checking next. It sounds like somewhere along the line you got an install path to D: and it is trying to do that. If you see it, change the D: to C: (probably you had a removable drive like a usb jump drive or hard drive and it got assigned D: and you saved something there. Now for some reason windows wants to save and install everythign there).

Well, Java should install to
C:\Program Files\Java So check the value in your registry (go to start/ run and type regedit and hit enter) (Note before modifying the registry you should back it up by going to file/ export and save a copy with a name you remember and a location you can find if need by from a dos boot floppy. My recommendation is to save it as Fred.reg to a folder you make C:\Fred so you have C:\Fred\Fred.reg if you mess up and can't boot you just boot to a floppy and at the A:_> type C: and hit enter at C: you type C:\Fred\Fred.reg and hit enter and it restores it) How to backup your registry 1.) Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion”. 2.) Double click on the “ProgramFilesDir” value in the right window. 3.) Check the value it should be C:\ProgramFiles . If not change it to that and Hit enter. 4.) Reboot the computer for the setting to take effect. The other possiblity is you changed your download directory to somewhere on the D drive. When you click the download does it ask where to save it? Do you have problems with other downloads?

i tried
i backed up the registry file like u said. then i checked the "ProgramFilesDir” path and it is indeed C:\Program Files
and the default place for anything to save is desktop. i think the last file i downloaded was to the desktop. so no issues there. i dont have problems with other downloads. they work fine. i tried to dl the file to C:\Program Files and install from there. It failed. I was wondering whether this might be an issue of Win OS version. i think it is not working because my laptop is not Win98 SE as the java update requires that and not Win98. can u tell me whether there is a most recent update JRE for the win 98. thank u. |

It could also be a problem at their end.
They have been experiencing problems and are temporarily not downloading java runtime http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp Quote:
With win95 you need a special version http://www.java.com/en/download/help/win95.xml I would go for saving the full download in case you ever need it since they are ending support.
