internet explorer crashes

Internet Explorer regularly crashes on me. It worked fine for years. I upgraded to 6.0 about a year ago. But about 1 month ago, it started crashing on me all the time. When I open it, it opens just fine. I can surf the web just fine in the beginning, but after navigating to a few different sites, the problems begin. When I try to navigate to a new site by either typing the URL in the address bar, or choosing FAVORITES, it crashes. However, I never have a problem going to a different page by clicking a link. When I try typing an address in the address bar, it duplicates my keypresses for about 4 or 5 characters, then displays the "This program has performed an illegal operation" message. For example, if I try to type techsupportforum.com, my address bar will read tteecch, and then it crashes. Sometimes when I click OK to the "illegal" message box, it just closes the window, and other times, it gives me the blue screen saying system is busy. Then I have to do a hard reboot. Other times, it does the hard reboot for me. Often, just clicking on the menu item FAVORITES crashes IE or the entire computer. I don't even have to choose anything. Actually, it doesn't even show me my favorites. It just crashes right there. Sometimes I get the illegal message box, sometimes I get a message from Microsoft saying "Sorry for the inconvienece, IE has encountered a problem and needs to be shut down". It asks me if I'd like to Send or Dont Send a trouble report.

Here's what I've done so far to try to eliminate the problem:

1. I downloaded and used Norton Anti-virus. I assume that it's the latest version since I downloaded it from their website.

2. I downloaded and used SPYBOT search and destroy. It found lots of stuff to destroy, stuff like CometCursor and a bunch of other programs that installed themselves on my system without my permission over the years.

3. I went to Add / Remove software, choose Internet Explorer, and choose the Fix IE option.

4. I re-installed Internet Explorer. (I did not uninstall it first)

After doing all these things, the problems still continue.

For what it's worth: The problem started around the time my puppy got big enough to jump on my desk and walk across the keyboard. Often, I'd come to my computer in the morning and find little annoying problems, such as Windows help files open that I didn't open, Caps Lock, or Num Lock engaged. But nothing that I couldn't fix by either undoing it or rebooting. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but the timeing is right.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might have any suggestions.

First question; do you now have IE 6, SP1? If not, I recommend that you go to the MS site, download and install it.

Hmmm, no other questions. When a system has been badly infected, there are often stragglers that the programs did not catch.

I would recommend that you download Hijack This from the link below, create. copy and paste a log here. We'll see if there is anything there standing in your way.

check your memory and system resources, and you could try setting the virtual memory settings higher. That happened to me one time, and it turned out that I was low on system resources.

Most of this is about the Clearsearch Hijacker.

Open a new HJT log, and check all of the above entries to be fixed. Then, with all explorer and browser windoes closed, tell HJT to fix them.

Reboot.

Then, find and delete the following files:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\XUPITER\UPDATES\XTSEARCH.DLL (folder)
C:\PROGRA~1\E-BOOK~1\FLIPAL~1\FpLaunch.DLL (use your search tool.
C:\PROGRAM FILES\CLEARSEARCH\IE_CLRSCH.DLL (usually a folder)

Open a new HJT log and paste it here, so we can look for stragglers.

jgvernonco, you are a genius! I let hijack fix all the things you recommended, but I couldn't find 2 of those 3 files you recommended I delete after the re-boot, but the problem seems to have vanished!! Thank you very much.

Sometimes, when you delete the operative part of the program, the program goes with it.

I especially like those!
