How to clean garbage files

Is it just me or are all those Java files and etc. that fly
by during a virus scan really necessary?

Does _every_ program need a cleaner like Nero has for instance? I just did the 5 step procedure on this machine.

What can be done to take out the trash that's not in the trash bin?

I did a brief clean sweep check in Windows but there wasn't much but a few hundred Mb in junk files showing.

If you are speaking of your temp/temp internet files use this program

Download CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

What most people have when they refer to Java is the Java Runtime Environment , or as Microsoft called it the Java Virtual Machine.
Java Technology consists of two components the Java Programming language and the Java Platform or virtual machine.
(Java is a cross platform language; meaning that it is designed to display content on any computer in basically the same appearance regardless of the operating system.)
So how does it do this? It runs a virtual machine , an emmulation of another computer running a different language than the one your computer runs.
http://www.informit.com/articles/art...p?p=31940&rl=1
This isolates the program being run in Java from hardware dependencies and most software interdependencies.
So all those jar files are like the cab files and dlls in windows. They are the compressed files on which this operating system runs. They allow the java applets and programs on a web page to be fairly small while still being able to create complex content on your computer.

Yes you do need them all.
Just as you should not delete dll and sys and cab files in windows you should not delete the components of java.

A side note is that originally the hope was that in addition to the cross platform content delivery this "virtual machine" would be like a protective box in which
things could be run and displayed without risking installation of viruses or spyware and alteration of things on your computer. Of course that hope of invulnerability did not last. But a very similar approach is what microsoft is doing in the asp.net framework which they hope will replace active-x and the distributed com model.
