Is the drive NTSF, 98 does not reconize NTFS
When you said new drive I thought you meant "empty"

Your not listening to me, 98 will not read NTFS you need to place it in another machine with a NTFS system installed

Hey, we fixed it!
the drive was jumpered as master, so we put it in the secondary cable as a master, unplugging the cd rom drive, which was set as the secondary master.

My System

When you put it in the XP NTFS machine, did you change the master/slave jumper on the back of the drive? Which IDE connector are you using?

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see your last reply.

thanks tj and koala.
we're cooking with gas now! it's all ok. i copied the turbo tax stuff to another machine with this hdd as secondary master. (it would not work as slave drive, and we didn't know the jumber setting map for it.) xp-home on the new machine recognized this hdd and we copied the files. i just wanted to thank you both for being so helpful to reply and help us.
