OS: XP PRO

Question Compaq Presario 1690

I was wondering if this notebook (laptop) can handle Windows XP Professional? I currently am running Windows 98 Second Edition.. I don't know the full specifications for this notebook but I'll list the things I know.

AMD-K6(tm) 3D Processor
64MB Ram
4.59GB Hard drive

and a RAGE MOBILITY-M1 AGP Video Card (If that matters with OS's). I don't know the MHZ. So, would I be able to run Windows XP Professional SP2 with no problems? Or should I just stick with Windows 98 Second Edition? Any help is appericated, and thanks for your time.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

I would stick with 98 if I were you. With only 64MB of memory the thing would be as slow as a turtle

Here on this site your total max memory is 192mb. I always suggest at least 512mb for XP to run smoothly.

Minimum requirements for win98
Although microsoft lists the minimum system requirements for installation as much lower you will find that a minimal install on a minimal system is far less satisfactory than sticking with the OS the system was designed for.

XP is bigger, more demanding than previous OS are. Look at their minimum requirements for win98
Quote:
A personal computer with a 486DX 66 megahertz (MHz) or faster processor
16 megabytes (MB) of memory
a FAT32 drive requires 175 MB of free hard disk space, but may range from between 140 MB and 255 MB
Well, I have to say that win98 was abysmally slow with 32MB of RAM and really did not perform acceptably in my opinion if you did not have at least a 400MHz processor, with 128MB of RAM and a 4.3 GB hard drive.

So we get to XP. Although you can get it to install on your system , you would find it abysmally slow . In addition; many times there are hardware and software incompatabilities when you install XP on an older machine. Normally it is recommended you uninstall any non compatible software and replace any non compatible hardware. But you have a laptop. If the hardware is incompatible you cannot replace it and you will just have stop errors all the time if it works at all.
I would not reccomend installing XP on any computer which was not at least 1GHz with 256MB of RAM and 10GB hard drive and you really will not be able to get it to run quickly and smoothly without at least a 1GHz Pentium III or Tualatin or faster (or equivalent) with 512MB ram and 20GB drive.

So no in your case I second TJs opinion, you should stick with the os it has and if you are dying for XP save up and buy a new system with it on it.

My 2 kids share a desktop with specs above XP minimums (P4, 512). My machine is well above their’s. My oldest also has a laptop with XP and above minimum specs (1G, 256). I’ve started setting up an older 98se desktop for her, equipped exactly like your laptop and both of us like it a lot. It boots fast, it’s wireless, runs faster than her XP laptop and only cost $25.00 for the wireless card. I’d stick with your laptop as is!
