System not reporting or using installed memory
I'm probably in the wrong forum but I couldn't find one more specific to my problem.
I've got a Compaq Prosignia Desktop 300 Series desktop computer with a PII-400. I don't know how to identify the MB, but if someone will tell me where to look, I will. The MB has three DIMM slots which are full. I can't for sure what I've got in them, but I'll attach a picture. No I won't . . .right now. I have to take the memory out of the slots in order to put them on the scanner to take the picture and I don't know how to do that. Here's a picture taken from overhead with my digital camera. I'm sure that's no help. I'll scan and send a picture of the DIMM's later, but this is what they say. Two say Compaq and the other one is one I asked for when I bought the computer six years ago. It's only 32 MB. I wanted to have the max memory I could have at the time I bought this wonderfully reliable computer and I think I had it, originally. Not sure now. I've just gotten accustomed over the years to the system slowing down and I thought it was because I was still using dial-up. Even the things the computer does on its own however, have gotten slower. I think it's been gradual, but I'm 60 and not sure really. It could have happened last year. Microsoft's site has various possible solutions to this problem, but as anyone knows who knows the subject, whatever it is, the many reduces to a few, with experience. So . . . any experienced Compaq PII-400 drivers out there who want to suggest how I can get back my memory? Gracias, I'll now try and take/attach a picture of the DIMMS, an overhead shot of dubious value. Please someone, tell me how I can do a scan of my PC's memory modules with my scanner? (With the memory modules out of their slots and the computer on - the scanner depends upon it . . . I should have explained . . . what?) Also, I use Win 98. Not the SE. Thanks, Mike Last edited by Flyright; 02-26-2006 at 05:56 PM. Reason: Photo of DIMMS |

Usually if a system is slowing down you need to clean out the junk in it and defrag. Clean out all the temp files......go to start/find/find files and folder/ and type in *.tmp......select all and delete........defrag your system on a regular basis
To find the name of your motherboard go to start/run and type in msinfo32 click on the + by components then click on system, (make sure there is a dot in advanced) on the right side and scroll down till you see system board or you can download a utility Everest Here and it will tell you everything on your machine the download will start when you click on the link and ask where to save it to.

Right click on My Computer click Properties. In the General tab under "Computer " (near the bottom) it will tell you how much memory is installed. Could you please jot down the amount and post it here? Its possible one or more of your memory sticks have gone bad.
