IDE help

I'm helping a fried with his computer. Its an HP Pavilion 8674D with an Asus cuv-nt skt 370 Mb, Via 694x chipset,512mb mem. Win 98se. Cdrw as secondary channel primary and DVD rom as slave. What we have discovered in Device manager both of those drives do not show up and under Hard disk controlles there are yellow exclamation markes on Primary Bus Master IDE Controller(dual fifo) and Secondary Ide controller(dual fifo) we have tried updating the Via 4n1 drivers and also it still shows up when we restart with both drives disconnected.
or with just the cdrw connected. Also when both are connected they both show up correctly in the Bios? so any help please.
and thanks

In Device Manager right click on each one and select update driver, let Windows search for the driver, it should have them on the HDD. If that doesn't work then do the same thing, but this time select to install manually, then you will get a list of components, select the correct one, and again the Windows drivers should be on the HDD.

Uninstall all 3 entries by right clicking on them and choosing uninstall. Then reboot and Windows should recognise a new device and install the drivers.

The OS has installed the drivers for the IDE controller, the drives themselves don't require drivers,so if IDE channels 1&2 are enabled in the BIOS the OS will install the drivers whether anything is connected up or not.

As the drives are being recognised in the BIOS (cables and settings must be ok) and Windows has installed the drivers, then the problem is with Windows not seeing the drives.I've found a lot of questions but no answers, the only thing I've found is this,in the first post check to see what that setting is.

You may need a motherboard driver update.

Do you know the motherboard brand name and model?

You shouldn't need the BIOS upgrade but there should be a driver for the motherboard that says....(brand here or model) + PCI System Management BUS then maybe an INF update. This worked for a friend of mine

Also sometimes things work better from safe mode so you can try removing them from safe mode or you could try re-installing Windows

Found one but you have to buy it. That's riduculus, you can buy the driver for $15 and the motherboard for $20. Still looking myself.

Found the chipset info though in case that's needed

VIA 694X Chipset SD-RAM/AGP/4PCI

The 4n1 drivers are the chipset drivers.
Have you tried connecting in a different order. Place the DVD as a slave on the Primary IDE and leave the cdrw as a master on the Secondary IDE. Have you tried swapping out the IDE cables with a different cable?
Are you making sure the jumpers on the drives are set correctly?

Check the properties of the devices with the yellow exclamation marks again, and on the general tab see if there's a code number. Here's a list of device manager error codes.

Do these drives show in bios?
If you disconnect one and set the other to master does it work in windows?

You can re-install Windows over itself. You won't lose anything.
