website links

Since uninstalling Norton Internet Security and switching to DSL I have problems with certin links on various sites including mail. I can get to every home page but only some links will work. With Yahoo mail I can replay or forward but when I compose I can't send and with outlook express I can't send anything. Support at my ISP say it sounds like I have a firewall issue.I have searched "find" for all files with Norton or symantec and deleted them but I'm not quite sure how to check the registry.I'm thinking about reformating and reinstalling 98se but would like to find out why I having this problem.

My System

Norton is terrible. Try this.....boot to dos and at the prompt type scanreg/fix

To get into the registry but I wouldn't delete anything in there unless you are positive it belongs to Norton.... go to start/run/ and type in regedit

Did Norton uninstall properly via the Add/Remove Programs? Are there any orphaned folders in C:\Program Files?

What happens when you click one of these "certain" links?

If you click on a hyperlink in a web page and only a blank window appears,

1. Go to Start / Run
2. Then enter regsvr32 urlmon.dll
3. Click Ok when finished
4. If that single change does not resolve the problem, repeat the process by running regsrv32 with the following dll files.

* Shdocvw.dll
* Msjava.dll
* Actxprxy.dll
* Oleaut32.dll
* Mshtml.dll
* Browseui.dll
* Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

To me , this sounds very much like the new DSL user who first encounters the war on spam.
Most major providers now make you use their mail server for outgoing email and refuse to forward port 25 (SMTP) traffic to another mail server (yahoo pop server for example). You can still have the header say it came from your yahoo account, but you must change the outgoing mail server for this account to the one your DSL provided.

I suspect the certain links issue is that you are clicking mail to links and have the yahoo account as default.

If not, you may want to do a malware check , read the five steps link below.

Since uninstalling Norton and upgrading to DSL what anti-virus program did you substitute with? How long before surfing the internet were you without an anti-virus?
When you try to send an email from Yahoo or Outlook do you recieve an error message?

This is a great service! After rethinking this whole problem let me restate the problem. I did not re-up my subscription to Norton's liveupdates while still on dialup. I THEN uninstalled the program after which i was not able to connect to ANY secure sites.A techie friend of mine cleaned up the registry, installed AdAware.and Firefox. With Firefox I was able to access all sites and everything worked normally,but when I tried to use Explorer I still had the problem with secure sites. Back to the present, not only the hyperlinks in Outlook won't SEND but my two Mutual fund sites won't let me past the home page infact even the "log out" link won't work, but yet my bank and other pay online sites work fine. With Explorer, Yahoo mail works fine but not with Firefox. This is the error message in Outlook when I try to send "A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. SubjectAccount: 'mail.nw.centurytel.net', Server: 'mail.nw.centurytel.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19 ?? I hope this helps.

Did Norton uninstall via Add/Remove Programs successfully? Norton obviously had some type of configuration set that allowed it to scan your emails.
Can you recieve emails successfully? Did you change your ISP settings in your emails when you switched to DSL? What version of Outlook are you using?

These programs are only to be used if Norton DID NOT uninstall successfully via Add/Remove Programs.

Heres some info if your using any of these versions, please read the Instructions
before using the tools.

SYMANTEC REMOVAL TOOL, SymNRT.exe

* Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005
* Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
* Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
* Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition
* Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier edition

Removing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier by using the Rnav2003.exe

I have NO problem receiving email at either of my email accounts. I was using web based email (peoplepc dialup & netscape dialup) before DSL and reset my settings per isp instructions. Outlook 6 and I had Norton 2003

You will not have any problem recieving mail from these accounts; but due to DSL providers blocking forwarding o f port 25 smtp traffic to "fight spam" you will not be able to send using these accounts from outlook, Outlook express, Thunderbird etc. You need to change the SMTP server for these accounts to the mail server from the DSL provider.

I wish you had asked here before you let someone mess with your registry. We could have given you the link to the Norton removal tool for your particular version as TJ just did. This is a better method than letting someone mangle your registry.
