Question Looking for free antivirus and firewall programs for older computer

I have an older computer, Compaq Presario 4770 with a Pentium 200 processor, 32 MB RAM, running Windows 98. I am looking for FREE firewall and antivirus programs that will run on my system. I have tried Avast, AVG, and Zone Alarm, but they all require a faster processor and won't work properly. I cannot afford upgrading or buying new. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?

Im affraid you may be out of luck. The closest I found to meet your requirements was McAfee but your still low on memory and its not free. If you upgrade your memory for $25 you can have an antivirus.

To tell you the truth, AVG is one of the least RAM hogging AVs out there, if not the least. If you would'nt of mensioned it, thats what I would recommend. I can think of NOD32 which works great and uses a little less RAM, but it is'nt free. You can give Bit Defender Free a try if you wish. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/bdfree.html

For a firewall, try Sygates free personal firewall. Small, and very stable.

Never used this, (don't like on-line scanners), but panda' s other products are great. This meets your requirements.

Panda Active Scan

You can try R-Firewall.

You can also get the older free versions of many firewalls on Oldversion.com. You might an old version of Tiny Personal Firewall.

One of the least demanding antivirus I know of.

You can get a free six month trial of F-secure which also has been fairly undemanding in my experience.
