as of two days ago my lap top will not go into standby, manually or automatically. since i do not want to shut down my computer every day or more than once a day what can i do? (when i do shut down i get a window telling me that a program is still running and i have to click "end task" before my computer will shut down, but i am not aware of any programs that are still open or running).

What program is still running when you are trying to shut down the computer? It sounds like whatever program that has to have it's task ended before the system shuts down, is the same program that prevents your system from going into standby. Go into Task Manager and see what programs are running. I would also suggest running MSCONFIG and see what programs are running in the system tray. Finely, try to find out what program that needs to be canceled before your system shuts down. Once you find out what program it is, use MSCONFIG to remove that program from the start up process if you can. That should clear up any issues you have. Hope this helps.
