Windows Crashed... PLEASE HELP

Okay sorry if this is a little off topic, but I didnt know where else to ask. If you know of a better forum, please refer me, Id appreciate it. Anyway...

I have 3 computers at work. One of them is still running on Windows ME and lately has been acting up. Not sure what the problem is but occasionally it seems to get bogged down and freezes up and I have to restart. I tried installing Windows XP but my disc got too scratched it wont go past like 40% install... so im screwed.

So i have been just lviing with the frustration. Well today it acted up and I had to reboot, but now when it starts up it runs the scandisk, and loads windows desktop but its like the resolution has changed and everything is super big. And I have no mouse at all. I can navigate a little with keyboard, but for some reason windows system restore wont work, says it was turned off. I tried putting in an old windows me install disk, but says I have MMSYSTEM.DLL error and wont run the CDrom...

I have restarted like 10x now and same results....what can I do? ???????

when i try and start it normally i get this error message

kb891711 has caused error in mmsystem.dll then i close window and move on, but screen is big and no mouse... and cdrom doesnt work... but if i boot in safe mode, i can use mouse... but no cdrom either... how can I backup some of my files on a cd so I dont lose them all?

try a system restore from safe mode, back to a date when all was ok,it may be caused because you have picked up a virus or the like
if the restore get's you back in follow greyknights instructions here
please help me
if restore does not get you back in,see what you can run from the instructions in safe mode
