I seem to have a problem with Windows98SE Internet explorer plus ActiveX controls. I have repeatedly tried to download Mcafee VirusScan without success, via AOL on the Internet. I have been through this problem with both AOL and Mcafee both of whom insist that it is a Microsoft problem. I have reistalled Windows98SE and Office 97 but has made no difference. Can anyone help.

Sorry, do that and then put *.mcafee.com in the box and add that site. Basically you are telling it that any mcafee site is safe and secure and can be allowed to install and run active x etc. Make sure that the slider on trusted zone sites is set to lowest to allow all activity.

Download problem
Hello Oyswyn and Geekgirl,
Thank you both for taking an interest in my problem. I have tried Oyswyn's suggestion, which unfortunately has not worked. When I click on the Mcafee download link the following appears on my screen:- Enabling ActiveX Controls McAfee.com uses ActiveX controls in its applications, and you must download the specific ActiveX components required for each application. Once these components are loaded, you do not need to download them again unless upgrades or updates become available. Note: If you are a Windows XP user, you must have Administrator rights to make the following changes. AOL Users: From AOL go to AOL keyword: Preferences Click on the By AOL Feature Tab Scroll down to and then click on Internet Settings Click the Security tab, and then click Custom Level to open the Security Settings dialog box. Make sure the custom settings are set to Medium. Click the Reset button. Click Yes to confirm the change. Select Prompt for these ActiveX controls and plug-ins options: - Download unsigned ActiveX controls - Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe When you are done, click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the changes. Click OK to close the Internet Settings box. You have now properly adjusted your ActiveX control, scripting, and cookie settings. Close and re-open AOL to ensure the changes take effect. As these conflict slightly with Oyswyns instructions , I only selected the prompt for the 2 activeX controls, closed and reopened Aol, clicKed on the download link, which again brought up the ActiveX screen. Any ideas, cheers Ray. Last edited by Ray Wharton; 02-12-2006 at 10:31 AM. |

Make sure that your Operating System and Internet Explorer are up-to-date by visiting the Windows Update Site and downloading all of the Critical Updates and Service Packs.

Hello Mistabigshot,
Yes I can get on to the Internet using IE. Hello Geekgirl, I tried to download the Windows98 updates, from the link you provided, but its seems that I am unable to download these either. Looks like I have a problem with all downloading. Cheers to you both. Ray Wharton |

Run the System File Checker may help some what. You also may have had a bad install. You stated you have already reinstalled windows and Office 97, was this a fresh install or a "dirty" install ? A dirty install is installing overtop the existing install.
System File Checker: Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Download problem
Hello Geekgirl,
Thank you for your continued support. Reinstalling Windows 98SE was a dirty install, I am a bit nervous removing the file then reistallation as I am not sure how. As you suggested I ran sfc which found 1 file that needed reinstalling, I did this following instructions and using the Windows 98SE cd, but this had no effect on my download problem. I have considered wiping my Hard disc clean and reinstalling files, is this a practical option as I have no idea how to do it. Cheers Ray Wharton |

Not sure if this will help as I never used McAfee Virus scan but try opening IE and using McAfee virus scan. AOL has it own browser which may be causing this .

Hello Geekgirl,
Thanks for you suggestion, I tried that, but I am trying to download a free trial Mcafee offered by AOL, I can't find these offers using IE. As I previously said both AOL and Mcafee blame it on a Windows problem. It looks like I will have to pay the Microsoft conultation fee. Cheers Ray Wharton. |
