CD rom not working

I have a windows 98 and never replaced anything for any reason. We just moved to the CD rom drive does not work to good sense then. It works fine to play any music cds, even once that are kinda badly srachted, but any games are hard to get to run. Either the diver sounds like it can not spin the disk fast enough or makes a noise that sounds almost like the disc is rubbing aginst something. I did try going through my computer to see if any will come up and it says the drive is not ready. Is there a simple solution or does the drive need to be replaced?

I made a mistake. The second sentence is suppose to be - We just moved and sense then the CD rom drive does not work to good.

try cleaning it, but it could be shot...

sometimes they dont travel well.
