Broad Band Set up Installation help Please
I have joined Tiscali BB (let's not debate the merits or otherwise of my decision please except to say in a previous life I used them for 6 years with no problems inc 3 on BB)
Anyhow, get notification line activated. Installation kit arrives comprising a Speed Touch 330 USB modem, RJ11 - RJ 11 cable, 2 filters, installation CD. So far so good. Put CD in an start the set up sequence. Follow instructions and think all ok but cannot connect. The modem has solid green lights showing against USB and ADSL indicators. I check the connections tab on Internet Options on Control Panel. Only shows my old dial up connection. Try and set up manual connection. Modem appears to be installed as it is there when saying what to connect using, although whether it should be there or not I do not know? Anyhow, still no joy. Try and follow Tiscali trouble shooting guide. Still no joy. Uninstall modem and try reinstalling. Still nothing. By now getting frustrated. So decide to call Tiscali help line. Get through to India and speak to Raj. Unfortunately he appeared to know less than I do about setting up Tiscali BB or indeed PC's generally. I had to keep suggesting things to him and he kept calling me a genious!! I wish. He then kept disappearing whilst I was on hold I think to speak to someone else who was telling him what to say to me. Trried all sorts but he could not help. Was on phone for over hour and half. Finally I tried to install modem again as was not convinced it was there. Eventually I received an error message as follows: Arequired DLL file Q:\XTRAS\STDETECTUSB\STDETECTUSB.EXE was not found. (Q = CD Drive) I assume that this file should be in the Xtras folder on the installlation CD Rom? He also had me pinging whatever that does? Could not ping www.bbc.co.uk but did ping 127.0.0.1. Anyhow, I do not think the modem is installed and there is no connection. I am completely stumped as Tiscali Technical help is next to useless. Indeed the first 20 minutes of our telephone conversation were spent explaining what a BT Master socket is with a clean ADSL supply and what RJ 45 plugs are!!! So, can any of you experts out there offer any advice or guidance? many thanks |

I would say that 127.0.0.1 is the modem's address, which means the modem is installed.Start your browser and type that number in the address bar and press go.If this does access the modem you should have instructions on how to set it up from here.

The main purpose of the CD is to configure windows networking settings and then connect to the ISP with generic username and password so that you can enter your permanent ones. I would either remove the dialup connection or at a minimum go to IE tools/ internet options/ connections and set to never dial and then run the setup wizard there. If you have a firewall, turn it off. If this solves the problem; rerun its access setup wizard. Quote:
I see more problems with USB modems than I care to remember. If you have any other USB devices, disconnect them. Although in theory a single USB root hub can handle 128 devices (including itself so 127 connected devices) in reality some devices only work if they have a dedicated USB connection. So either disconnect all other USB devices, buy a PCI card to add another set of USB ports ; or get an ethernet modem. If you connected the modem to the PC prior to running the CD, you may have caused windows to misidentify it and refuse to load the drivers when you ran the CD. If so, go to device manager and look for any unknown devices, devices with yellow ! or usb devices you do not have connected. Remove them and unplug the modem, reboot and run the cd and connect when you are told to .
