when buying a hard drive dose it need to be a certain brand for the type of mother board?

Not neccissarily. Just so it has the same interface as the MB. (i.e. IDE, SCSI, SATA, etc.)
Side note: Most new HDD on the market today are larger than 40GB. An older board may have compatibility issues with seeing large drives. This could be a factor with the OS as well.
