sound problems

i have a sb PCI sound device drive and my sound has not worked for some time now. I don't know what i might have done but when i look at the audio in the control panel the description says
driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem.
any suggestions on how i might fix this would be appreciated. thanks

try going into the device manager (my computer>properties>hardware>device manager) and have a look if you can see any yellow circles with question marks or exclamation marks. let me know what you see

it says that this device is working properly.
no exclamation marks or anything
