first, it's always best to list the specs of the computer your talking about. Second, I don't think that 98 is too old to work with High-Speed, considering High-Speed has been around far longer than 98 has.
Is this computer connected to a router, or is it a direct connect to the HS-Modem? I know that 98 is notoriously picky when it comes to getting networking to work, honestly, if you can't afford an upgrade to 2000 or XP, then I might suggest going the route of free OS's, like ReactOS or a Linux setup with Wine so that you can still use the windows programs you have. The More detail you can give, the better, like what NIC are you using, what internet service are you trying to connect to. (sometimes the company messageboards or FAQs can give you the info you need) --Whitestar90 |

In all likelyhood broadband is not the problem; the software their ISP wants to install is. In reality, most of the time this software is not needed to access the internet it is at most needed to setup and configure / activate the account. http://www.fastaccess.drivers.bellsouth.net/Note that most ISPs will also have a web page where you can get the PPPOE software for OS other than the standard Win98SE, ME, and XP . (Scroll down to near bottom of page)Also, as they noted, some older versions of windows you need the Dialup Networking update to be able to run PPPOE client software. Without knowing what kind of broadband you are talking about it is hard to give specific instructions. But lets go DSL. You buy a router Some as low as $18 before rebates here for example No need for wireless, and if you shop around you can get a good 4 port ethernet only router fairly cheaply. You configure the computer as instructed in the router setup manual (Set to obtain an IP automatically, disable wins and dns and clear gateway in the TCP/IP page of network control panel) Then you use IE to access the router through an IP address they tell you to use and you enter the username/ password your ISP has given you (If need be, call tech support, explain you cannot get their software to run on your machine and are using a router for security and to enable your access ask them for the info to enter) in the PPPOE setup page. Then you just run the internet connection wizard in IE Tools/ internet options/ connections. Tell it you connect through a LAN and that is it.
