win98 limitations: dvd burner stuck at 1.99gb

My Pc was going through some hard times, so i had to format. everything went well, install drivers, updated windows, ie6 , everything working.... except, for my cd & dvd drivers...

i can't burn anything with them. Nero tells me that they aren't available (red x marked in the burner selection) , while they should be.

did some research,... i updated my aspi driver, which was 4.60, but now 4.71,.. didnt solve the prob. i updated both of my drivers firmware correctly, ..sure they're up to date, but it didnt do a thing,...

when i pop a new blank dvd in,.. in shows : AudioCD : 1.99 gb

when i put a burnt dvd or cd, it still says 1.99gb, but they're fully accessible..

i have win98se, before i formated,... my dvd burner (aopen duw1608/arr )

was workin fine,... at that time, i just added the drive, and the pc detected it with no prob.....

but now.... i've been looking around on the internet like crazy to find some anwsers.. i pretty sure someone here can help me!!

This is indeed odd.
Have you installed all the chipset drivers for your motherboard? Have you installed the original software for your burner?
The first thing which came to mind is the old FAT32 file size limit of 4GB, but that is twice the size you have and is not the drive/partition size limit (137GB) for Win98.
However, the drive limit for FAT16 is indeed 2GB (or 1.99GB as you put it).
So, the first thing I would check is if by some chance you formatted FAT instead of FAT32. What did you use to format your drive? If you right click on it and choose properties, what file system does it say you have?

Also, does the drive show correctly in device manager or is it mis identified?
Lets eliminate the obvious before we get into difficult things.

In nero, are you on the correct tab? There is one for cdrom burning and one for DVD.

You may have basic input/output issues. The effects are cumulative. Generally if a device can't operate in it's optimum mode it will revert back to a less complicated mode

Suggest stepping back to removing ide drivers. Then drive diagnostic utility. Then look at software. As oshwyn said "Lets eliminate the obvious"

No need for a new thread.
What he was referrring to is that if a device such as floppy or optical drive fails to load its drivers; it falls back on the default "Bios" or "DOS compatability" drivers which have the old limits of 2GB (1.99) , 8.3 file names and 66 character total path depth.
The next thing to try here, since you do have the software installed is to go to control panel / system / device manager
Locate the drive (Under CDROM) and right click and choose remove (or uninstall) do the same for its controller under hard disk controllers (secondary IDE or secondary Ultra ATA)
If there are any devices with Yellow ! (Exclamation marks) or ? beside them, uninstall them too.
If there are any error codes listed when you select the drive or one of these , and choose properties then post them

Also regarding Nero. Is this a full install you paid for ? Or is it an OEM copy ? If so is this the drive it came with? Most OEM burner suites will not work with drives other than the one they came with .
