Cry problem reformating harddrive

Hello All,

First time to post

I have HP Pavilion mdl 8565c running win98 . I want to do clean instal of winXP pro sp2. After running all 6 XP setup disks I put in xp cd . It asks what to do with existing partition and I click to reformat for clean install.

Something caused the process to fail after quite a long time and progress bar is full yellow. When computer is rebooted a prompt says to boot with system disk which I don't have

Now the drive is no longer found by any computer I have put it in. Linux, winXP pro, win98se.

Tried booting computer to win98se cd and got error message no ide device found

Is it possible to do sys recovery without disk ,if so how?

Have Imade a door stop? All help here apreciated

Thanks in advance

Steve

boot with system disk=xp cd
Set the boot sequence to boot from the cd-rom first. Place the XP cd in the cdrom and Follow the prompts.

problem reformating harddrive

Crazijoe,

I had to use the sys disks the previous 3 times I did a XP install.

Two installs were on clean drives and the cd wasn't recognized (Dell Optiplex gx240).

One install was on a drive that had 98se on it cd was not recognized.(E-Machine Monster 500)

All these machines are are running great.

So naturaly I blindly tried the same routine with the HP Pavilion 8565c

Geekgirl , you may be on to something per "boot with system disk=xp cd
Set the boot sequence to boot from the cd-rom first. Place the XP cd in the cdrom and Follow the prompts."

I'll let yall know

Any other replies will be apreciated

BTW I work nights that's why the late response

Does the drive show up in the BIOS?

If so, try downloading the drive manufacturer's diag tools (run the downloaded file to create a boot floppy) and using them.

Can you boot to a floppy and fdisk the drive?.... Place the XP cd in the cdrom and format and install.

Change the boot sequence in the BIOS before proceeding. Set to boot from the floppy first, after fdisk change the sequence to boot from the cdrom.

Since not even your optical drive shows in the BIOS, either your IDE controller is toast or your cables, to the drives, are not seated correctly.

Send a message via MSN to linderman
considering both ide channels arent detecting devices residing on them / chances are your mother board has had it / try new cables just to be safe / but chances of two bad cables are slim.
