Unable to Defrag and Scandisk
Win 98 SE
Problem defrag will not defrag after one percent Scandisk stops midway and repeats. After ten attempts it puts a message on the screen saying that a program is open that is changing the information on the Hard Disc. Fact: desktop is open, and scandisk or defrag, that is all. Any suggestions please |

This behavior can occur if you are running ScanDisk with the Automatically Fix Errors option enabled and a file name (including the file's full path) exceeds 259 characters.
Run ScanDisk with the Automatically Fix Errors option disabled. When ScanDisk encounters the same file, it will prompt you repair the error, delete the file, or ignore the error and continue.

Thanks to everyone who replied and gave me ideas
1. I did run ScanDisk with the Automatically Fix Errors option disabled, but it it did not solve the problem. 2. I did open in safe mode and managed to scandisc and defrag. thus solving the problem Thanks again |

I recently had a similar problem and it turned out to be Zone Alarm. Any program that randomly accesses resources can cause the defrag to stop or restart on Win95/98 and possibly ME?
