Win 98 SE Lock up in 256 colour
I have an old IBM Aptiva (133mhz, 128mb mem) which I have installed Win 98SE on. I have also installed a PCI ethernet card so that I can use it as an additional internet device. All colours and resolutions work fine in stand alone, but the whole machine freezes when trying to connect to the LAN. Main machine is an XP 2.8mhz Acer.
The Aptiva works beautifully on the intranet, file sharing, email, the lot, if I run it in 16 colour. Just looks a bit grim. I have tried unsuccessfully to get the last BIOS for this machine (COUFLASH.EXE). I have tried the ethernet card in all PCI slots. The system says everything is working fine and shows no IRQ conflicts, I think. Any ideas???????

I'm assuming that this is an integrated video card (part of the motherboard) ... It may be on its way out.
You should be able to disable it (either a jumper on the motherboard or through the BIOS). Install a PCI video card (a local PC shop may have a used one for very little $$ ... say an 8mb or 16mb card). |

Also, I removed the old adapter from the device manager, but it tried to reinstal every time I booted, could it have been interfering? The challenge is to find out how to properly disbaable the old one...! Back to the manual Thanks |

First , make sure you have the correct drivers installed, update if possible.
Then right click on desktop / properties/ settings/ advanced / performance. Try sliding the hardware acceleration all the way left. If this solves it, you can move it one notch to the right and see if you lock up. Repeat until you experience the problem. Then boot to safe mode, and move it back to the left one notch.
