ME locks up

Now that I have my new xp computer for the web I decided to look at my old one to find a fix so I can give it away.
The problem is it locks up every 5 to 8 minutes. I did the quick restore and it ran for 15 minutes then locked up. Then I installed a new hard drive, ran a flight simulator program for 15 minutes before it locked up. I put the old hard drive in, and removed the extra ram I installed a few years ago bringing it down to 256 ram, it ran for 20 minutes before lock up.
Ran Mcafee and spybot without any problems.
Any Ideas would be appreciated.
I know a few people who have school kids that could use this computer, I hate to just chuck it.

Check the fan on the CPU, as well as the one in the power supply - heat may be an issue here. It may also just need to have all the dust blown out (you can pick up canned air at an electronics shop, WalMart ... lots of places).

"Lock-ups"seem to be getting more and more common w/ Windows Miserable Edition. I would switch to Xp or just go to Linux

Good advice. I removed power supply and blew out the dust. Then I removed the fan that clips onto an aluminum part that has fins on it. Can anyone tell me what that part is called?
It was clogged with dust. machine has been on with a game running for over an hour without a lockup.
Thanks for the suggestions.

It's called a heatsink ... It's a cold metal (cools quickly) that draws heat away from the processor (or whatever it's attached to). The fins provide more surface area so the heat dissapates quicker.
