Please help with internet connection.

I just did a clean install of Win ME. for my sister but now I cant access the internet.I have installed the network card correctly and the led is on for the card. I dont remember what I did the last time this happened. When I double click My Network Places and then click entire network I get an error unable to browse the network Windows is unable to gain access to the network. I dont need to share files just use the hi-speed DSL for the internet. Please help
I have gotten all the patches etc. and IE6 how come I cant see the little network connection icon in the task bar?
Thanks to you all for your help.

Did you reinstall your drivers for your network card? I would look at the device manager to make sure it doesn't show any conflicts.

Device Manager shows everything ok no yellow exclamation marks or anything, I havent installed AOL yet (trying to talk her out of that) just trying to go with IE for now to check if I can even get on and check Windows update to see if there is any updates I still need. I just hate using dial up and would rather use the DSL.

Unplug the dsl modem power.

At WinME desktop click Start > Run > type: winipcfg click okay.

In the winipcfg box set it to display the network card name (not ppp or something else), power on the dsl modem and click "Renew all".
