My System

Question 95 won't recognize second 1.03 GB Hard Drive

I am trying to install a second 1.03 GB hard drive on a computer with 75 mHz and Win95. The computer refuses to recognize the second hard drive. I need another hard drive to be able to have enough room on my computer to install Win98. Any suggestions as to why it won't recognize it and how to solve my problem?????

you have to set the second hard drive as slave. you do this by setting the jumpers (next to the power) on the back of the drive. configuration varies from drive to drive but there should be diagram on the drive to show which pins the jumper(little plastic clip) goes on

an example diagram can be seen here http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...ies6family.gif

You may also need to load software from the drive manufacter that will let it see a larger drive than the bios supports.

Is the drive detected in the bios?
Normally, this is the proceedure for installing a second drive.
You take the existing drive and change its jumper from STAND ALONE to MASTER and make sure it is connected to the end of the cable.
You set the new drive to SLAVE and connect it to the middle
Some boards require you to set both drives to CABLE SELECT and connect Master to end and Slave to middle (Some Compaqs reverse this )

Then you power up and when you hear the POST beep and see the screen say something like "Press DEL to enter setup" you do so and enter BIOS setup.

Here you must change the primary slave from NONE to AUTO and then click on auto detect hard drives if your drive and motherboard support this option. On some old systems you must set it to user defined and enter the cylinders, heads, and sector information which is written on the data plate on the drive.
You save settings and exit.
Now before you can use the drive you must partition it with FDISK and then format it with FORMAT from a boot floppy.
Note that when using FDISK you should be very careful .Make sure you change drives and are on Hard disk 1 (the primary master is hard disk 0) . Likewise when formatting make sure it is D: you format , not C:
