Question Does anyone know if there's a way to ...

Does anyone know if there's a way to use my laptop to record short lectures, or speeches. I have a small microphone that will plug in ok, but so far all I found in window's will only record for 60 seconds at a time. This is found at -

start > programs > accessories > entertainment > sound recorder

I need somthing that will allow me to record for 5-10 minutes. For example if I wanted to take my laptop to a college lecture, and record certain segments, this would be alot better than a tape recorder, b/c I could label each segment as a file, and then go back and listen to that particular part without having to scroll through 30 minutes of tape!

Any knowledge would be appreciated

Note: - not sure if I'm posting this in the right place. where else would I post a general question like this?

Pocket Voice Recorder (free) http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/PocketRecorder/
Quote:
Pocket Voice Recorder is freeware sound recorder that records equally well from microphone and any other input line available with your sound card. Recordings are organized as messages and may be easily exported to standard WAV sound file format.
Audio Notes Recorder (40 day trial shareware) http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...id,7948,00.asp
Quote:
This easy-to-use voice notes application works in your system tray. It offers two operating modes (analog and digital), three microphone modes (normal, spy, and voice-operated recording), and the ability to export to .wav or .exe files. You can also send messages as e-mail attachments...
If you want something more advanced that allows you to edit the sounds you record try Audacity, a free audio editor that can be used to record from a microphone. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows

Try tuccows or ZDnet for sound recorder downloads.

I found this one quite quickly.
http://www.soundrecorder.net/

(I have not dowoladeded or tried this application. I have no knowledge of it, and I am unable to comment on its suitability for your purposes. It is merely offered a as pointer to an application which may suit your needs.)

Most recorders are shareware or free trials (SoundRecorder $30)
While I was searching I found one which looked ideal for you, Free Audio Recorder, but it is full of spyware so be careful of downloading anything 'free'. The sites Changeling recommends are very reliable, and the ones I listed are safe.

Audacity is the best free recorder I've ever seen. Just use that- you can export directly to mp3 or Ogg. It's perfect.
