The OS is windows 98
The processor: From what I could find it is eather a P2 233 or 266 you can download software that would id it . Saundra Lite http://www.download.com/3000-2086-10018691.html would. A P2 of any sort by todays standard is slow.

What can help 98 out is a good derag.
Go into start, programs ,system, system tools, defragment Harddisk. With 98 If I remember correctly, you can also get tp defrag through the my computer icon (On the desk top) then right click on the C:\ drive , select properties in the next window there may be a tab that has tool on it select that and there may be a button for defrag. Start this and let it run. If it has not been done in a long time it could take a while. Note: Do not have it connected to the internet or have any programs running while this is in progress.

Defrag is a good place to start. There are other utilities that are easily used from within a running windows system as well. The Windows Disk Cleanup utility is found in the same system utilities as Defrag, and is good to use before Defragging the drive, That way you get rid of things you don't need old temp files, unused applications and stuff first. DO NOT format the drive without you have the Windows 98se installation CD!!!!!
Evrything it takes to make the computer boot up into a windows system is installed on the hard drive. Formatting removes all this stuff. Be careful.

256mb of memory will run XP but it will be slow. You would be better off installing 2000 at this point unless you can upgrade your memory to at least 512mb.
What MHz is the processor
