Windows update and Hotmail problems

I recently did a full restore of my hard drive after a virus screwed up my computer. I restored the computer to its original state. Since then, I have not been able to access hotmail nor does windows update work. With windows update, I can sometimes get as far as "review and install updates". When I click "reveiw and install" I get an error message. I can access most other sites. I know its my PC and not my ISP because I can have no problem when I connect with my laptop. I've tried everything thats been recommended online (i.e. check clock, clear HOST, change various IE settings, etc.) Nothing works! The only difference on my system is that after the restore, I loaded Norton SystemWorks 2005. I tried disabling various settings and even uninstalled the software......no avail.

Help!!!!! dont know what to do anymore short of starting from scratch and doing another restore.
