Data error reading Drive C

My computer tries to boot up then comes to a black screen and says "Data error reading Drive C Abort, Retry Fail? I try to boot up in safe mode command prompt and it does the same thing. Also when I put in "win" from the prompt it says HIMEM.SYS is missing.

Sounds like you have a failing drive.

Boot to a Win98 floppy and run this:

scandisk c: /surface /autofix /nosave /nosummary

and press ENTER.

This may help you get back into Windows - I would immediately back up any data you have.

If you added anything new and installed new drivers(ie: mouse, video, etc.) This may be causing the problem you are having. This happens usually when you have bad clusters on your hard drive which is an indication that your hard drive is failing. Boot with a floppy and run scandisk to do a surface scan to see. I this is the case, after you get back up you run a scandisk daily to see if you are getting anymore bad clusters. If so hard drive is going. Back up eveything you have now.
