Hi
My PC is running Win98SE. I have a dial-up modem connected and also a Broadband connection - the PC has an Ethernet cable attaching it to the ADSL modem/router. I use Windows Update and it comes up telling me there is a new load available for IE6 SP1. The IE I have been using is IE6, it came with Norton 2003 and had had some patches applied through Windows Update. When I accept & run the IE6 SP1 patch from Windows Update, the PC cannot access the Internet any longer. Some addresses I can reach using "ping" over a broadband modem (connected via Ethernet), others are just non-returned. www.yahoo.com seems to reply, www.microsoft.com does not. There is also a dial-up modem. If I connect to my dial-up ISP (not using broadband) then I get a good connection, registering user logon etc, but Internet Explorer doesn't connect. I tried backing out the IE6 install (using Add/Remove programs) - this appeared successful but the result was no better. I then could not see IE on the Add/Remove box so unable to remove any further. I had seen this once before, that time I was able to reload IE6 from my Norton disk. But this time it tells me "Service already installed" and will not install IE6. In desperation I reloaded Windows 98 using Windows Setup. IE now is at version 5 (according to Help About). But when I try to install IE6 from the Norton disk it STILL says "Service already installed" and exits. Is there a known problem that IE6 SP1 won't install on Win98SE? And why doesn't reinstalling Win98SE get me back to a basic position where I can access Internet? Any help would be terrifically useful before I tear my hair out... |

IE6 never played well with 9x systems. But, to fix your current problem, go to www.litepc.com and download IEradicator. Run this app on your affected system, then reinstall from the CD. This will completely remove IE from your pc.

Thanks for this - brilliant idea to have IEradicator.
So I downloaded it and ran it. Now I don't have IE at all on the PC, and my PC will now connect to the Internet - using Mozilla Firefox. Great. Only trouble is, Norton Antivirus insists on having IE6 installed. When I try to load the MSIE6 install program, I still get this message: Error The specified service already exists Does this mean there's a registry key or something left over ? If so, how do I clean it out? Martin |

Why not install one of the Free anti virus programs instead of Nortons.
If you do some research on the web and on this forum you will find that it not a good program. Try either Avast or AVG they are both free,do not hog resources on you computer and if you dont like them just remove them and install nortons.

Don't know if this explains why IEradicator didn't fully complete, or a side-effect of running IEradicator.
I tried running it twice - still get the "Service already exists" message if I try to re-install IE6. I noticed that there is more of IEradicator which runs after the restart, so the following message may mean IEradicator has been unable to complete its work: Required DLL not found SHFOLDER.DLL Program unable to start I thought this just meant my system was incomplete after running IEradicator, but now I suspect it means the IEradicator package did not get through all the planned tasks after the restart. So I went to Microsoft download site, downloaded the SDK package for SHFOLDER.DLL, extracted into my downloads folder. This gave me a small kit of parts for developers to include when they want to redistribute SHFOLDER.DLL. The main item in the kit of parts is SHFOLDER.EXE, which appeared to do nothing at all when I ran it from Explorer with double-click. So, I moved this to root C:, checked for SHFOLDER.DLL with a Windows Explorer Find, and then ran SHFOLDER.exe from the MSDOS prompt. Find now shows SHFOLDER.DLL sitting in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Nearly there, I thought. I then ran IEradicator again, including the restart. Only to get the same message about SHFOLDER.DLL not being there. And, just for the record, attempting to install IE6 from the Norton disk still gives the message "The specified service already exists". There must be a way out of this... |
