My System

Start with these:

On-line Scanners
Scan your pc with 2 of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall. Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Are you downloading the .zip compressed hijackthis?
I suspect you have either set real player as default to open .zip files or if you mean that when you click on the download, it opens real player, you have set it to handle URL file transfer protocol or one of the other download types.

I would go to control panel / folder options (or double click my computer and choose view / folder options in the window that opens) Sewlect the file types tab
Locate
URL:File Protocol
URL: File Transfer Protocol
URL: Gopher Protocol
URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Make sure they are set to open with IE.
Look for things set to open with Real Player (Has that funny Q icon I think) and if they do not say RealVideo, or similar (start with Real)(Except for Scalable Multicast, Streaming Metafile, SMIL Document, you select them, click edit and change to the appropriate program (IE in the case of the URL ones)> If in doubt, just select and choose remove and when you next encounter this type of file it will ask you what to do with it.

Another technique would be to go to IE and go to tools/ internet options/ programs and click IE should check if it is default browser.
Close IE, restart computer, restart IE, and then close and restart computer, then download.

yes i was downloading the zip file and after i did what you mentioned it says "hijackthis.exe" now, and it downloads where i can use it. so thank you very much, its greatly appreciated. One other question; Is there any free devices that fix errors like a kernal32 error or anything like that? i downloaded one device but then it said 20$ a month. for the past few years its always performed these illegal operations and says its kernal32 most often, but occasionally it says other things.its not detrimental or anything but every once and a while my cpu screws up in all sorts of ways, good thang its not more common.

If it is Kernel32.dll it is the 32bit core of windows; however any other spelling and it is a virus or trojan
Example
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q316692

http://www.liutilities.com/products/...rary/kernel32/

You will need to run hijackthis and post your log file on the appropriate board for them to analyze it.
In the meantime you may want to try these tools to see if you can remove it (the virus you have) with an automated removal tool

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Mcafee stinger, download and run it. IT will remove most of the most common viruses.
Or
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_cleaner.html
Avast antivirus cleaner tool

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
A squared is a free trojan scanner and remover. Highly recommended.

Update your antivirus and do a full system scan. If you do not have one
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Avast 4 is free for home use, You have to register once a year, but it remains free and will automatically update not only the virus definitions, but also the program itself . It is skinnable, so you can choose any of a vast number to get the interface you like, and it is very low resource usage.
