kernel32.dll and other dll hell
I just did a fresh build but am still using win98se.
I made a fresh install from the win98 cd. I used one of my backup drives to test that had all my settings on it. The main machine still gives dll errors all the time. I reinstalled kernel32.dll to what I thought was the right place. Would a reinstall from the cd fix all the errors or is there an updated kernel32.dll which will auto install? |

There is no updated kernel32.dll.
Try Running the System File Checker Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Ok,
I dood it. Will check back if that doesn't clear it up. Since you are Microsoft I'll ask why didn't this stuff straighten out by itself since the install is fresh? On my unfresh install of another setup I've been getting 'taskmon' errors at shut down. Will sfc straighten some of that out as well? |

SFC will restore any corrupt or missing files, and after a fresh install you shouldnt need to run that but you may have had a bad install, it has happened
The Task Monitor (taskmon) checks the disk-access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. The Disk Defragmenter tool uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs that you use frequently are loaded faster. Try SFC on the other drive also make sure you visit the Windows Update Site and download all of the Critical Updates and Service Packs.

I had to bail on a disk defrag because it was taking forever because of stopping and starting. The drive is a 40G with
some larger media files on it and about 3/4 full. The defrag stopped and started frequently through many hours of operation. All the starting progs that might interfere like AVG, Sygate etc were shut down. The taskmon is still evident and requires closing before system will shut down. |

Run defrag in Safe Mode
Boot into Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears) to prevent the starting and stopping. Post the exact error you are recieving on the other pc
