Hard drive prob. ... I think

Hello,

My computer recently became ridden with spyware, and I decided to reformat. Well it quickly became clear that that was not the right decision.
I first tried using my recovery CD that came with the computer. It got approx. 23% into the recovery, then it said "Corrupted file," and failed to continue recovering. I then tried another OS cd, and upon running scandisk, which was required, it froze, and continues to do so. Does this sound like a problem with the hard-drive? Or atleast something that could be fixed by replaceing the HD? Thanks for any help.
