Networking 2 98SEs and an XP

Hi, I am trying to network our 3 computers, a compaq (98SE) a gateway (98SE) and my new one with XP. I have a Linksys router and a router I was using with my xbox's. The one hooked up to the xbox's is also hooking up the new XP pc. This router is running into the Linksys. The Linksys has the Compaq and the Gateway hooked up with the Gateway being the "main" computer since it has the printers hooked up to it. All computers access the internet alright, and the XP and Compaq can talk to each other, but for the life of me I cant seem to get the XP and Gateway filesharing and printer sharing. Any ideas?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Make sure File and Print sharing is enabled. Disable your firewalls to see if this is the issue

I did check the boxes, but it seems like they don't "stay" checked. I'll check them click ok and then restart the computer but the next time I go inside they're unchecked, I'm just out of ideas and M$ tech support is $245.

I believe you need to click "Apply" and it should ask you to restart the computer (98)
Also make sure they are in the same workgroup

Well heres what I got now, After I check the boxes in file and print sharing I click ok, than I click ok on the main network box and it prompts me to insert the Win98 disc, I'm not sure If I have a Windows 98 disc, the computer came with it installed. I do have a Gateway operating system backup CD (version 98.1) Is this what its asking for? It says "caution" this may erase all files and programs, and I defintely dont want that to happen.

Do you have a cabs sub folder? Usually under windows/options/cabs... if you point the prompt to this location on your hard drive (instead of the CD) it will install anything you need from this location as if it is getting it from your installation CDs

Well I found out that I was missing a file called svrapi.dll. So I downloaded this file and followed install instructions. Windows still couldn't find it and couldn't find it in "CABs" so I put the file in CABs and it seemed to work at that point and it rebooted, but it still displays as not file and print sharing.

Try Start | Find | type in: *.cab and press Enter (make sure it's set to search the whole computer) to find the folder with the win98 cab files.

Verify Network settings:
-Client for Microsoft Networks.
-using same workgroup as others, and each pc has a different name.
-Access Control is share-level.

Keep in mind it can take several minutes for win98 to actually make a connection.
