old IBM

Hello: I have an old IBM 450 as a backup unit. Very slow but it HAS been working. Now (Aug. 19) it has been acting VERY strangly. I CAN get on the internet but its is very very slow. AND..when it comes on I get a message that says " an erron on Disc C prevents ScanDisk from fixing it."
It says further that ScanDisc encountered a data error while reading the FAT on drive C. THis error prevents ScanDisc from fixing this drive.
MInd you, I CAN get on the internet but most programs either are not responding or are very very slow. I use the old unit as a back up but has it probably come to the end of its days??????
Many thanks., Oxford.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Possibly your hard drive is failing.

Boot from a win98 startup floppy and type;
scandisk c: /surface then press enter

You may also want to use the maufacturers hard drive diagnositc utility, you will need to know the make/model of your hard drive

Both of those you would boot from a floppy.
For the diagnostic utility you would need to make the bootable floppy following the manufacturers instructions.

My System

Restart you pc in MS-DOS mode, then run the following:

scandisk c: /surface /autofix /nosave /nosummary

Once it's done, reboot.
