[resolved] Close Program window

Prior to running disk defrag I want to close all programs by first using ctrl/alt/del to bring up that window. I can't remember the next step(s) to close individual programs. If I select a program and hit ctrl/alt/del again it simply restarts the computer. Selecting a program and hitting the del button doesn't work either. I've done this correctly in the past but just can't remember the proper steps. Thanks for any help.
p.s. I'll write the steps down this time.

It may be best to run disk defragmenter in Safe Mode. You can be assured that there will be nothing running at the time of the scan.
Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears)

Thanks, Geekgirl. Actually, after posting the msg I remembered how to do it and got to about 98% done and it kept kicking back and restarting untin I went in and deleted the screensaver. That did the trick. Next time I defrag I will try doing it in safemode, as you suggest. I appreciate your response.
