Laptop slow to load

HI All hope you can help,

My daughter has an Acer Travel Mate. It takes ages to load once command prompt says "Starting Windows 98..." it sits there apparently doing nothing (no hard drive action) eventually it beeps on recognition of the pcmia card and then loads up.

Used selective start up in msconfig to experiement variously disabling System.ini, win.ini and start up group. Each attempt seemd to make no difference in the load up time.

Apparently been like this in living memory.

PLUS

Once up and running seems to be OK EXCEPT it is constantly tickling the harddrive.

What should I be looking for and how?

Any suggestions please?

I would be looking for spyware and viruses with these symptoms. Try the online virus scan below and also download, update and scan with ad-aware and spybot.

Thanks Terrister,

I do run Norton antivirus and scan with ad-aware and spybot. But I'll try this other service you suggest to see if there is anything these aps have missed

HI Again,

Ran spybot,ad-aware and the virus checker you suggested.Did find some spyware and removed it but that was all.

The computer still takes 1min 50secs to go from "windows loading" to "beep" I've found a PCMCIA card.

What else can I do?

`greetings

i would max out the memory in your laptop
but:
first, please go into your device manager, through the control panel-system-hardware and check for any yellow marks called conflicts

secondly dont use norton, for a system with limited resources, its a recipe for speeds like a snail racing a sloth through a pool of honey....norton is a hog

use spybot, update it first, you must have an internet connection open for spybot to update.

download hyjack this from the link below, copy and paste it in notepad, then post your log to have one of the secuity people go through it

post back

Try booting without the pcmcia card. Does it boot much faster?

If so try updating your pcmcia and network card drivers.

Yeah it did load significanlty faster without the pcmcia card. I updated the driver for the card but didn't seem to make much difference to laod time once reinstalled.

OK but surely this loads after the user logs on

use spybot, update it first, you must have an internet connection open for spybot to update.

Already did this, including the update. Did find somestuff but doesn;t seem to change the load speed or the contant "tickling"of the hard drive when not in use

download hyjack this from the link below, copy and paste it in notepad, then post your log to have one of the secuity people go through it

OK here is the log hope it makes sense to someone! :)

Taking a different tack

OK not having the greatest luck here, so let me try a different tack:

fdisk and reinstall all. HOWEVER, I don't have the original 98SE cd. The cabs and setup are on the hard drive.

3 questions.

1) Can I just burn this to a CD and use it to boot and install from scratch?

2) Where will I find the 98 security key... somewhere in the registry?

3) Any traps for young players here that aren't obvious?

cheers

dins

Let's fix that broken internet access entry in your HJT log. It's probably caused by a bad uninstallation of WinGate Proxy Server.

Please download LSPFix.exe

Instructions for using LSPFix
  1. Double click on LSPFix.exe to run it.
  2. Once running, you will be required to tick the disclaimer - "I know what I'm doing".
  3. You'll find a windows with 2 columns. In the left column which is labeled 'Keep', click once to select the entry:
    • wglsp.dll
  4. Then click on the arrow pointing to the right, >>.
This will move the entry to the right column labeled 'Remove'
  5. Click the Finish button to complete the fix.

Let us know how it went.

I'm back and I'm unhappy and ful of self loathing.

I Uninstalled and deleted and whole lot of stuff in my impatience and now I have some problems.

My biggest problem even before listing the problems is I can't get into safe mode. F8 isn't the key and tried lost of other F type keys with no joy

Can any one suggest a workaround? The maybe then I can get into windows and try to undo some damage
