HDD Ghosting, Need Help.

I will soon be ghosting my current HDD (running on 98plus) to a new computer running XP. Is this something I can do my self, or would it be a better idea to pay $30 to some comp guy and have him do it for me?

If you really want to clone it into a partition on the new hd, pay the other guy. Make sure he's done it before, ask for references. Ask how it's done-see if he knows what he's talking about. ($30 sounds like your paying for his learning experience-or maybe I live in a different world)

There is an easier, non-invasive, alternative. Clone the Win98 hd to another hd for temporary backup purpose (we don't want to violate licences), then put one of them into the new computer as a slave drive.

In xp's boot.ini file just add the second OS.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows Professional" /fastdetect
D:\ = "Windows 98"

Whether you clone to a partition or add as slave, a cloned temporary backup should be made-in case something goes wrong.

Now this is the important part. The copy that's being installed on the new computer has to be run on the old computer one last time, go into Control Panel_System and delete everything from System before shutting down for last time. Then when installed in the new computer Win98 will install all new devices-this is as close as you will get to a clean install. You will need Win98 drivers for the new harware, have the disks handy.

($30? )

.

I'm not building Im buying the whole computer, but I want to keep the old one too. I called the place Im getting the computer from and the guy said it would cost about about $30 for him to do it.

I thin I'll just pay the guy, thanks though.
