win98 won't update and can't click on links

ok i think i cleared a worm off my computer. trouble is windows still will not update. it will display the updates but the download box doesn't do anything and explorer crashes when i click cancel. if i click on a posted link, i just get the outside window and that's about it. sometimes i can copy and paste the link into the window, but it's a pain in the butt. any suggestions before i totally reformatt the heap of s***?

Some of your files may be pooched.

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.
