USB flash drive not recognised
HI Hope you can help,
i have a128 MB USB flash drive which works on Mac and XP immediately. My win98SE computer "sees" it but wants a driver to make it work. Trouble is I don't have a driver and the manufacturer Feiya Technology don't supply one (at least not online) Is there a work around for this? Or a generic driver I can try? No response in the Removable Media forum so I'm trying my luck over here. Any suggestions appreciated. dins Last edited by _dinsdale_; 07-06-2005 at 11:59 PM. Reason: Misspelling |

Hi Stu
Your suggestion didn't work I'm afraid. At first didn't recognise the drive at all. Then, after I tinkered with the inf file it recognised it and installed it as Flash Card Reader. Though it assigned a drive letter and appears in My Computer, any attempt to access the drive results in "the device is not ready" error message. Even the computer claims the device is working properly and installs and uninstalls it in hot swap operations. The driver indicated in the system hardware list is the same as another flash drive I have (from a different manufacturer) diskdrv.inf. This drive works perfectly well after being installed with its specific driver. Any other ideas? cheers dins |

try uninstalling the usb in your device manager and any references tied to it.
with 98se, some devices want the drivers installed first, and yet some want windows to find the unknown device .. and then load the drivers. |

But the basic problem is I don't have any drivers for this device and can't find them on the net. I think it is a Feiya device but no drivers available for this device for win 98SE.
All other USB devices on my machine work fine and when I insert the drive it recognises what it ie: usb disk. but can't find the driver within my system. I'm looking for guidance as to where I might find, substitute or even make (though I'm not that clever) a driver to get me going. cheers dins |

Yeah tried every which way to install then uninstall (including deleting registry keys directly... scary but successful) then reinstall Stu's suggestion. No Luck.
Tried your pny suggestion, didn't work. Software installed fine but didn;t recognise my drive. Tried a few other manufacturers with no luck (there are thousands!), but with no direct solution here, it isn't worth the time/trouble to continue to stab in the dark (and I worry about adding detritis to the system)... but it does irritate me to be defeated by technology! thanks anyway dins |

Welcome to TSF:
The more up to the minute USB devices run off the 2.0 standard / as such you are going to have to go to your mobo website and and get an upgraded usb driver for your USB controller / (just to check yours out / right click on my computer / go to device manager / then click on USB host contollers / then right click on USB controllers and select properties / that will give you your usb driver version (1.1 ~ I would bet ) also download the win 98SE service pack which increases the effectiveness of win 98 and usb devices http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html if you need further assistance you will need to tell me the manufactuers name of your host controller / it should be either Intel, NEC, VIA, SIS and mobo model regards joe
