Need help! SBC is just making me run around in circles.
I recently wanted to transfer DSL service from desktop to a laptop running Win 98se. I bought a Dynex PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter to insert into the slot but the Ethernet light on the model wouldn't turn on. So I thought the slot was broken. So I went back to the store and bought a Linksys Ethernet connection via USB port. The ethernet light still won't turn on. In the meantime, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted, bought a new ethernet cable and have been on the phone with SBC support. Nothing is conflicting or disabled in the Control Panel. It worked fine with the desktop one day, and the next day when I made the switch I had problems. SBC is telling me that I need a PCI Ethernet Adapter. That is what I bought the first time (which didn't work) and I believe the USB adapter is also the same thing. Correct? The chances of both the PCI slot and USB port being broken are slim. Am I doing everything correctly? What else could be the problem? The SBC software and the Ethernet card software have Win98se drivers in it. Is it SBC? Please help! |

Hello and Welcome to TSF
Most always you need to install the drivers for the ethernet adapter first before putting it in the slot. Was the adapter showing up in the Device Manager and showing everything was ok? I have had a similar experience happen to one of my customers pcs. I brought the system to my shop and cleaned all the viruses/spyware out and everything was connecting and running fine. I took it back to the customers place and it wouldnt connect. To make a long story short, it was the dsl modem that verizon had supplied for her. They sent her another and we got her connected and on line. It worked fine when I left her place but did not when I returned. Funny things do happy out of the ordinary. So one question, do you still connect from the desktop?

The driver is installed and is showing up in Device Manager. No conflicts and it's not disabled.
I will have to bring the modem plus ethernet cable to the new location of my desktop but I imagine it will work fine... Could it be the modem is not compatible even though SBC has driver for Win98se? Should I try formatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything? It should be in order, the laptop was never really used. Did I purchase the correct devices? |

No, dont reformat just yet
Did you go into Network Neighborhood and set up the adapter properties correctly? If the device is stating it is working properly in the device manager then I would say it is a setting of some sort. Did SBC go through the settigns with you?

Reset the modem, (or unplug modem power-count to 3-plug it back in). Then start your computer. Should work then, sometimes the modem simply doesn't recognize a new connection is made.
Tip: START-Find-Files, then type winipcfg, you will see a listing for winipcfg.exe in the windows directory. RIGHT click the file and select Create Shortcut, it will put the shortcut on your desktop-so now you can easily see if you have a network connection, correct network adapter is listed/selected, etc. You can rename the shortcut as Cable or CableStatus, whatever, it's very handy. As example. I release the connection if computer is not going to be used for a while, or before defragging. have fun. |

Yes, SBC went through all the setting with me multiple times. Their conclusion last night was that the modem is broken. This is their fourth diagnostic (somewhat random)
So I will try to plug the modem into another computer and see if that light turns on. If it doesn't, then I get to conveniently spend $100+ to buy a new modem. If it does, then I don't know where to go from there. All my Network connections are set up properly. I even tried to manually confirgure the IP address and that didn't work. |

There are two network adapters listed when I go to winipcfg...SBC's PPoP (which has no IP address, obviously) or the PCI Ethernet Card (which has IP address Gateway etc.. ) Which should I use? |

Most computers only have the one NIC so this usually doesn't have to be checked.
When there's more than 1 NIC, or another adapter used-like USB, then this can be a problem point. If your computer is connected to the DSLmodem with the ethernet cable then winipcfg has to be set to the ethernet adapter. If set on anything else you can't make a connection. If connected to DSLmodem with USB cable then it's the PPop. If set on anything else you can't make a connection. Close winipcfg, reboot, connection should be made automatically.
