Scandisk hangs at about 2.09GB.

Hello ,,, :) :)

And, THANKS for your advise, time, and help!!!! :) :)

Using the following environment:
o Motherboard is: SPACEWALKER SHUTTLE HOT-637
o Windows 98 Second Edition is installed
o Award Modular BIOS V4.51PG Award Plug & Play BIOS
Extension v1.0A
Copyright 1997
o a Fujitsu Hard Disk (MPB3064ATU) rated at 6.48GB on drive D:
The Fujitsu ERASE and DIAGNOSTIC were executed as required in a pure DOS environment and both ran to completion without error. The D: disk is now clean with binary 0's written to the disk!

With the BIOS set to NORMAL(CHS) and the manual setting of cylinders and heads as specified by the Fujitsu Specification Sheet for this drive are set to the following:
13,410 Cylinders 15 Heads 63 Sectors
the BIOS now shows a 6.48GB SIZE and a reboot of the system shows that W98SE recognizes the disk as 6.3 GB,,,,so far so good!!!!

The pure DOS environment execution of FDISK (drive 2) and FORMAT(D:) ran to completion with no errors and both recognized the drive as 6GB.

When the pure DOS execution of "SCANDISK D: /checkonly /surface" the MAP of the drive did not show any red colored B's ("some bad sectors"), and all seems to be good.

However, when the SCANDISK reached the 512,378 cluster (about the 2.09GB point) SCANDISK hung!! It seemed to be stuck on this CLUSTER with no further changes in the display to show any progress of SCANDISK after several hours of run time.

While the above BIOS settings for MODE of NORMAL(CHS) with the manual settings as defined above does allow the system (W98SE) and BIOS to see it as 6.48GB and the FDISK and FORMAT to see the drive as 6GB with no errors, the SCANDISK always begins to fail at the 2.09GB point and the process of ERASE, DIAGNOSTIC, FDISK, FORMAT, and SCANDISK was tried several times.

However, when the BIOS MODE for the drive is set to LBA or LARGE the setting for the drive is automatic for a 4.95GB drive space and the CYLINDERS/HEADS/SECTORS cannot be modified manually in this version of BIOS when MODE is set to LBA/LARGE.

With the BIOS mode set to LBA or LARGE the FDISK and FORMAT both run as expected with no errors and shows the 4.9GB size.

Then the pure DOS execution of "SCANDISK d: /checkonly /surface" runs to completion with no errors on this 4.9GB BIOS configuration!!!! (????)

The above listed failure of SCANDISK seems to suggest that the version of the BIOS MODE NORMAL(CHS) settings allows the operating system and BIOS to see the drive at 6GB, but the SCANDISK for the W98SE and the BIOS version above will not handle past 2.9GB. So, maybe the NORMAL(CHS) mode for this BIOS version does not have the Extended CHS or NORMAL (ECS) modification(????).

Or, perhaps is there an updated version for SCANDISK at Microsoft for this W98SE situation(????).

Etc.,,,,,,

Any comments would be appreciated,,,,,:) :)

THANKS for your time, advise, and help!!! :) :)

Jerry

Also, which version of DOS/Scandisk are you using? Versions up to 6.22 only work with FAT16 (2GB hard drives)

Hello Linderman and Koala,,, :) :)

THANKS for the REPLY!!!! :) :)

And, many appologies for the following BAD mistake:
The BIOS setting of MODE to LBA or LARGE was not 4.9GB!!!
After a re-examination the size was: 495MB
So, the correlation between BIOS MODE LBA/LARGE 4.9GB to the MODE NORMAL
6GB was erroneous and my mistake---"BAD BRAIN CONVERSION!!!"---SORRY!!! :| :| :|
For the FDISK and FORMAT these both work from the W98SE recovery Diskette or from the normal BOOT of W98SE. And, in either case they both run to completion with no errors and recognize the 6GB.

Once FDISK and FORMAT have been executed the normal BOOT of W98SE shows the D: drive as 6.03GB and is a FAT32 type drive.

The reply makes sense--- I am now using all the scan disk executables that I can find in this environment:
E:\SCANDISK.EXE 143,818 5/6/1998
C:\WINDOWS\SCANDSKW.exe Version 4.70.1998 5KB 4/23/1999
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SCANDISK.EXE 141KB 4/23/1999
If there is another version of SCANDISK for W98SE for the larger drives for FAT32 I have no idea where to go get it(???)!!!

THANKS for the REPLY and further suggestions!!! :) :)

Jerry

Hello Koala and Linderman,,, :) :)

OK,,,all three of the scan disk mentioned in the previous message were executed in the BOOT W98SE Recovery diskette environment, pure DOS , and W98SE SAFE MODE boot, and all refused to get past the 2GB point.

Also, found a comment at Microsoft related to the following driver and the version found seems to satisfy that comment related to scandisk:
esdi_506.pdr Version 4.10.2222
Thanks for your advise, help, and time!!! :) :)

Hello Joe,,, :) :)

Yep,,,there are no processes running other than EXPLORER, PURE DOS, or EXPLORER in SAFE MODE, and PURE DOS from the W98SER boot recovery diskette (A: and E:).
Tried SCANDISK in all four environments and none worked.

OK,,,, Thanks for the LINK,,,,gonna give it a try and I'll post results.

Jerry,,, :) :) :)
