GlobalAlloc Failed

Hi, I'm helping a friend with his computer but theres this one error I can't get rid of. It comes up during the boot process everytime. All it says is GlobalAlloc Failed and the only option is to click OK.

This is an old Win98 system. 4GB HDD, 160MG RAM

GlobalAlloc is just the old standard Windows routine used to allocate global memory (I'm a computer programmer). If a program complains that a GlobalAlloc failed, it's unlikely that it's actually out of memory. 160MB should be more that enough for Win98 systems. I don't suppose it gives you more information like which program or driver is giving the error message? There is one obscure situation which Microsoft documents here which gives that message.

One thing you could do is hit F8 before Windows boots and try "step by step confirmation". You may be able to use that to figure out what is causing the message. If that doesn't work then you could run msconfig (click "Start", click "Run", then type msconfig, click "OK") and try disabling startup items one at a time (don't disable anything important! - ask if you're not sure) to track down what's causing the message.
