Mistake IE 6 fails to complete installation

I've got Dell 8100 1.3gHz P4 computer running Windows ME. It got stuck in Windows UPdate will not complete - a couple of months ago. . . the update that was stuck in it's throat was the upgrade Internet Explorer 6.

Reinstalling WinME doesn't help.

Deleting Windows Update directory . . . doesn't help.

Norton System Works says the registry is perfect.

Using MS config. I stoped everything that starts automatically from starting . . . didn't help.

The install runs until about 70% complete, then sends up an error message that it can not complete the install, restart. . . etc.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Jon

Does this error contain a code of numbers and letters?

Does it always freeze at the exact same place or just about the same place?

Are you updating an updated IE? (example came with 5.0 then upgraded to 5.5 -- now your going to 6.0 ..)

Does the system Freeze when you get this message or are you able to exit the install?

The install progress bar runs to about 72% and while it is installing the web browser, the progress bar srcreams to 100% and a list of features that were not successfully installed. A message box opens indicating, 'unable to complete the install, restart the computer and try again.'

No numbers.
No indicating of cause.
Just can't complete.

Are you trying to update IE on the internet or have you downloaded it and then tried installing it?

IE 6 fails to complete - Solved

The solution was found. It's a bit unusual.

Enable 'show hidden files and folders' on Folder Options

Open folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\UNINSTALL

move all the files in this folder to another folder.

Reboot.

Install IE6

Reboot

move files back into C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\UNINSTALL

It works. I'm told is a Microworst Bug.

Failed IE installation

Thank you for posting your findings. Although it was over a year later this post solved a similar installation problem when IE had become corrupt after cleaning out spyware.
