EEK! stops responding at startup ?!

Help ! My Windows 98 comp stops responding after startup! the screen was frozen for no reason. So I rebooted, and ever since then it's been crazy. It freezes after about 10 seconds on startup usually and trying ctrl alt del wont do anything for it. I end up restarting it with the power button. once i open, it freezes again and i'm back to where i was before.

Have you tried opening in safe mode? Does it freeze?

If it does not freeze in safe mode, try going to start,run and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab and uncheck any unneeded items. See if you can run a virus scan in safe mode.

Check your computers cooling fans. This sounds like a cpu fan not working well.

Confused =\

i opened up the comp and saw two tiny fans - one that is visible from the back of the comp and another small black one inside the comp with an Intel Sticker on it. Which on is the cpu fan? I cleaned the Intel fan already.

The cpu fan is the intel one. Do both fans seem to be working well?

Is the cpu fan hot to the touch?

Cry =\

i've already

- took out and put back the RAM stick
- checked the fans
- changed the registry
- disconnected and reconnected the power connectors of the motherboard
- tried opening safe mode, but the comp still freezes within that mode

what else did I miss checking ?

Take all all cards not needed to start the computer(nic,modem,usb...) and see if it freezes. If not, add them back one at a time.
